Van Mieris was een van de Leidse fijnschilders, kunstenaars die zó fijn werkten dat de losse penseelstreken nauwelijks te zien zijn. Dat specialisme is goed te zien bij de glanzende rok van de vrouw en het bont langs haar jasje. We zien hier een man die een schoothondje plagerig aan zijn oor probeert te trekken, maar de vrouw weert hem af. De lachende man is Van Mieris zelf, de vrouw zijn echtgenote Cunera van der Cock.
