In het lage zonlicht staan twee herders met hun vee bij de rivier de Merwede, een ruiter kwam zojuist voorbij. In de verte ligt de ruïne van Huis te Merwede, even buiten Dordrecht. Cuyp was gespecialiseerd in dit soort landschappen met dieren die baden in een warm licht. Dat lichteffect was het handelsmerk van kunstenaars die Italiaans aandoende landschappen schilderden. Cuyp nam het van hen over en voegde het toe aan zijn landschappen, die verder onmiskenbaar Hollands zijn.
