De Vlaamse schilder Adriaen Brouwer woonde enige tijd in Amsterdam en Haarlem en introduceerde daar het boerengenre. Zijn voorstellingen laten op een karikaturale manier het leven van boeren en buitenlui zien – de keurige Hollandse kopers vermaakten zich daar zeer om. Buiten een herberg spelen wat boeren een potje kaart. De gemoederen lopen – mede door de drank – zó hoog op, dat ze elkaar te lijf gaan.
