Jan Gossaert was één van de eerste kunstenaars, die de Italiaanse renaissancestijl introduceerden in de Noordelijke Nederlanden. Kenmerkend zijn de klassieke vormen van Maria’s gezicht en de overtuigende modellering van lichaamsvormen en plooival. Op dit schilderij staat de tedere aandacht van een moeder voor haar kind centraal: ze spelen kiekeboe met haar sluier. Voor de blauwe mantel en jurk van Maria gebruikte Gossaert ultramarijn, een kostbaar pigment, dat van gemalen halfedelsteen is gemaakt.
