De Vlieger was gespecialiseerd in zeegezichten. Hier heeft hij de compositie heel doordacht opgebouwd: van de donkere voorgrond rechts naar de lichte horizon links. Vissersboten zijn zojuist aangekomen op het strand, een deel van de vangst ligt op het strand. Bovenop het duin staat een deftig paar alles te bekijken. In deze mensen konden kopers zich gemakkelijk verplaatsen; dat verhoogde de aantrekkelijkheid van het schilderij.
