Van Ruisdaels schilderijen vormen het hoogtepunt van de Hollandse landschapschilderkunst. Vaak hebben ze een monumentale allure. Hier bereikte hij dat door ons van onderaf naar het hooggelegen kasteel te laten kijken. Van Ruisdael was de eerste die deze kunstgreep toepaste. De Haarlemmer Van Ruisdael bezocht kasteel Bentheim – net over de Duitse grens – in de zomer van 1650. Het zal grote indruk op hem hebben gemaakt, want hij koos het in de jaren die volgden regelmatig als onderwerp.
