Salomon van Ruysdaels favoriete onderwerp was het Hollandse waterlandschap met rivieren, plassen en meren. Hij schilderde het vele malen, vaak volgens eenzelfde stramien. De horizon plaatste hij laag en de wolken daarboven diagonaal. Zo creëerde hij op klein formaat een groot gevoel van ruimte en diepte. Hier en daar liet hij bovendien de rozebruine onderlaag zichtbaar waardoor de wolken iets beweeglijks krijgen. Salomon van Ruysdael was de oom van Jacob van Ruisdael, die als landschapsschilder nog beroemder werd.
