Bij een herberg op het platteland heerst vrolijkheid: een rondreizende vioolspeler komt aan de deur om een lied te spelen. Hij wordt begeleid op de draailier door het jongetje met de rode jas. Jong en oud vermaakt zich met de muziek. De Haarlemse schilder Adriaen van Ostade schilderde heel wat vrolijke gezelschappen van boeren en buitenlui. Hij was daarmee een voorbeeld voor Jan Steen, misschien was hij zelfs diens leermeester.
