Salomon van Ruysdael is dé schilder van het waterrijke, Hollandse landschap. Bij deze frisse voorstelling ligt alle nadruk op wolken en water. Onder een imposante wolkenlucht varen kleine scheepjes met bolle zeilen de verte in. Zo schiep Van Ruysdael op een klein oppervlak een groot gevoel van ruimte. Hij ging daarbij heel efficiënt te werk: op verschillenden plaatsen liet hij de bruine onderlaag van het schilderij onbedekt, zodat die deel uitmaakt van de voorstelling, bijvoorbeeld in het water.
