Jan Brueghel de Oude schilderde zo precies dat hij de Fluwelen Brueghel werd genoemd. Hij was de eerste Vlaming die bloemstillevens schilderde en had daar veel succes mee. Dit kleine boeket van voornamelijk rozen en tulpen staat in een bijzonder vaasje van Chinees porselein. Het is een kendi, een Chinese waterfles. Brueghel plaatste het voor een donkere achtergrond, waartegen de rozen, narcisjes en gevlamde tulpen mooi afsteken.
