Volgens de Griekse mythologie moest prinses Andromeda geofferd worden om haar land te bevrijden van een allesverslindend zeemonster. Toen ze aan een rots was geketend en haar lot afwachtte, werd ze gered door de Griekse held Perseus. Rembrandt schilderde niet het hele verhaal, maar beeldde alleen de doodsbange Andromeda af. Dat is typerend; hij maakte de emotie het hoofdmotief van de voorstelling. Het realisme waarmee Rembrandt het naakte lichaam weergaf, staat ver af van het klassieke schoonheidsideaal.
