Een gedoofde kaars, een leeg glas, een horloge en een doodshoofd – dit zijn niet zomaar wat voorwerpen bij elkaar. Elk object draagt de boodschap uit dat onze tijd eindig is. Memento mori – gedenk te sterven. De Haarlemmer Pieter Claesz werd beroemd met stillevens met een beperkt palet. In dit schilderij gebruikte hij naast bruin en groen een klein beetje blauw voor het lint van het horloge. Meer kleur had hij niet nodig om het er levensecht uit te laten zien.
