Maria houdt de slapende Jezus in haar armen en toont hem aan de herders. De schilder zoomde flink in, waardoor het lijkt of we als kijkers vooraan staan – de beste plek om het kind te zien én de reflecties in de glimmende, koperen kan. Het schilderij toont stijlkenmerken van het werk van Caravaggio, bekend om zijn sterke lichteffecten en rauwe realisme. De Vlaming Jordaens is echter nooit in Italië geweest. Hij maakte kennis met het caravaggisme via andere kunstenaars, zoals Rubens.
