In het dagelijkse leven was Loef Vredericx zilversmid, maar hier is hij te zien als vaandeldrager van de Amsterdamse schutterij; een erebaan. Trots liet Loef zich in functie schilderen door Thomas de Keyser, destijds de meest gevierde portrettist van Amsterdam. Hij draagt het kostuum van een schutter met een groene sjerp om zijn middel, een ijzeren ringkraag en een degen op zijn zijde. Op het vaandel prijken de Hollandse leeuw en de tekst Pro Patria, voor het vaderland.
