Een man draait zijn hoofd naar rechts en kijkt ons over zijn schouder aan. Hij is opvallend uitgedost met een baret met veren en een mantel met goudborduursel. Het licht valt helder op zijn gezicht en laat het metaal van zijn ringkraag mooi glanzen. Het schilderij is geen portret maar een tronie, een karakterkop. In dit geval van een soldaat, die op zijn ‘antyks’ gekleed gaat. Rembrandt signeerde het schilderij niet met RHL (Rembrandt Harmenszoon Leydensis), zoals hij lang gedaan had, maar alleen met zijn voornaam.
