Op een zomerse dag heeft zich een groep mensen verzameld bij een simpele tent. Op het strand rijden een wagen en een rijtuig, er liggen schepen in de branding. De horizon ligt extreem laag, waardoor het lijkt of we zelf ook op het strand zitten. Zo is er bovendien veel ruimte voor de imposante wolkenlucht en de zachtgele gloed van het zonlicht. Adriaen van de Velde was een meester in de weergave van dit soort atmosferische effecten.
