Dit kleurrijke stilleven uit 1620 is het vroegst bekende schilderij van Van der Ast, een van de eerste stillevenspecialisten. Op een kostbare schaal van Chinees porselein liggen kweeperen, granaatappelen, abrikozen en druiven uitgestald. Los op tafel liggen nog wat exotische schelpen en een tulp. Van der Ast koos een hoog standpunt waardoor we bovenop de tafel kijken en we elk voorwerp afzonderlijk goed kunnen zien. Dat was gebruikelijk bij stillevens uit het begin van de 17de eeuw.
