Esta obra de grandes dimensões, ambígua na sua grandeza épica e temática banal, de carácter intimista, foi apresentada no Salon de 1882, em Paris. É uma obra de juventude mas uma das mais importantes pinturas do autor e também uma das mais significativas peças da arte portuguesa pela organização espacial da cena, traçada numa oval que se dilui em monocromatismo, numa linha envolvente da representação pictórica de um sentimento de cumplicidade artística deste momento musical. Eventualmente, interpretam o Rigoleto, de Verdi, como desenhara, alguns anos antes, a cena de um serão em casa dos pais…
