Jac Leirner's Street, a site-specific installation, is comprised of a horizontal line made from hundreds of stickers featuring distinct motifs and selected by the artist from her vast personal collection. All iterations of the work vary, and are hence unique. The interpretation of Street depends on what viewers bring to it. One person may recognize a logo from an art fair they attended. Another viewer might be pleased by a particular design or the way it fits into the overall composition. The work originates in Leirner's Hip Hop (1998/2025), where the horizontal line is made from hundreds of pieces of adhesive tape, in different widths, colors and thickness. In its materiality, the work testifies to the music genre’s sticky sociality: once emerging from Black and Brown block parties, today, hip hop continues to celebrate the intersection of drums, voice, and dance. With Street, then, Leirner references yet another sticky continuation: the city-dwellers love to take to the streets and leave behind a mark. The sticker is a recurring medium of Leirner's practice – a colorful material that serves as a ubiquitous vessel of contemporary mass culture. Some stickers even date back to the 1970s, when the artist began collecting them in her childhood. Similar to Hip Hop, the stickers are organized by color and shape. In this installation stickers are also organized by subjects, such as music, price tags, political stickers as well as those commonly used in the art world.
