Simon Fujiwara's painting belongs to the artist's series of works recreating iconic art works by famous, historically significant artists through the perspective of his cartoon figure Who the Bær . Executed in acrylic, charcoal, and pastel on canvas, Fujiwara's large-scale work draws on the monumental painting Guernica by Pablo Picasso from 1937. Picasso's work is a powerful anti-war statement that vividly depicts the horrors of war and its impact on innocent civilians, specifically in response to the German bombing of the town of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War. Guernica has become an enduring symbol of peace and is considered a forceful visual plea against the barbarity and terror of war. (A tapestry version of Pablo Picasso's work was installed at the United Nations in 1985.)
