Rod Nelson ARE hat den Weg zur Druckgrafik nicht über eine Kunsthochschule gefunden. Sein Adoptivvater war Musiker und Amateurdrucker und hatte eine Druckpresse im Haus. Nelson selbst arbeitete viele Jahre als Schreiner, später im Waldschutz und in der nachhaltigen Forstwirtschaft.1994 sah er in der Hayward Gallery ein Werk des japanischen Holzschnittkünstlers Shiko Munakata.
