Richard Studer kommt aus Surrey und lebt an den Welsh Borders in Presteigne. Bevor er angefangen hat, Holz zu gravieren, hat er über hundert Opernproduktionen inszeniert. Sein Weg zur Druckgrafik war nicht geradlinig: er begann ein Studium der Veterinärmedizin, brach ab und debütierte 1993 als Opernregisseur am Bristol Old Vic.Heute arbeitet Studer ausschließlich mit Holzstich (Wood Engraving), dem feinsten aller Hochdruckverfahren.
