Christian’s 1984 trip to Morocco produced some of the best works in his oeuvre. One such work is The Nightwatchman’ (1984) in which we meet Beduda, a one-eyed Tangier beggar. Christian saw that this man ‘had more with his Faith and one eye than most people know with both eyes and less Faith’. Christian admired Beduda and his ability to be joyful in his disability and spiritual in his poverty. He saw in him an allegorical personification of what makes us human and our path difficult.
