These 'calligraphic' plates and dishes of the early-1950s closely relate to a series of clay monoprints that Coper produced around this time. Drawing into 'sheets' of wet clay, the blocks were then covered with ink and an impression taken from them (see Tony Birks, Hans Coper, Marston House, Yeovil, 2005, p.37). They capture an important moment when Coper was exploring sculptural concepts, and the interplay between two and three-dimensional forms.
