The work is a preliminary sketch for the 1972 work “Balancing”. In “Balancing”, Mayer incorporates for the first time rods as armatures for draping fabric, an illustration of the growing complexity with which she combines various materials, and her ongoing experimentation with new ways of hanging fabric.
