George Hammond Steel was best known for his paintings of Cornish harbours and coastlines. This small-scale oil on board of Coverack (a small coastal village to the east of the Lizard Peninsula) comprises of the artist’s distinctly rich textures using several layers of paint. Deliberate scratches into the surface further highlights the rugged scenery, while the village’s fishing boats have been illustrated by an adeptly applied flash of primary colours towards the centre of the composition.
