Bomberg’s second notable stay in Spain commenced in 1954. He and his wife, Lilian, intended to set up a school of art in Ronda with classes taught in a similar manner to his work at the Borough Polytechnic. The school never formally opened due to disputes over the tenancy of the building, but the release from teaching enabled Bomberg to embark on a remarkable series of drawings and paintings of the Andalusian landscape. The expressionistic use of charcoal and vigourous rubbing of the sheet with his fingers gives a sense of great immediacy to the directly observed view.
