Having graduated from the Royal College of Art in 1958, Howard ventured to Italy where he travelled from region to region, painting Tuscan landscapes, Venetian canals, and Florentine architecture. Fascinated by the effect of light upon the city's stone, Howard developed a remarkable ability to draw the viewer's attention to the more intimate and authentic views of Florence.
