Le Lieutenant René-Henri Drouet avait recueilli Juliette Drouet à l'âge de deux ans et elle l'appelait son père. Victor Hugo voulut que ce portrait soit encadré et qu'il fût orné d'une inscription. Il avait laissé le choix à Juliette entre une inscription latine que nous n'avons pas et cette ligne "Mon oncle par le nom, mon père par le coeur". Juliette choisit cet alexandrin.
