The artist often took inspiration from popular figures of her generation, working from press cuttings and had a particular interest in the Kennedy family, and was, like many, particularly affected by the assassinations of JFK in 1963 and five years later of his brother, Robert. Fourplay is thought to be inspired from a photograph of a scene at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles on 5th June 1968, shortly after the assassin, Sirhan Sirhan, perpetrated his crime against Robert Kennedy.
