There is much talk that Skara Cathedral began to be built in the 1000s. In every century since then the church has been rebuilt and even changed to what it is today. From the beginning until the Reformation it was a central sanctuary for the entire diocese, and not a parish church as today. At the end of the 1200th century, the first major reconstruction took place, after Bishop Brynolf Algotsson was installed here. At the time, the Romanesque style was considered obsolete.
