Exposition universelle de 1889, groupe de canaques. Portrait ethnographique. Trois hommes vêtus de pagne sont assis sur une natte de trois-quart face et un de profil, au milieu d'un espace recouvert de sable. Au second plan, sur la gauche de l'image, derrière ce petit groupe : une partie de tente faite de branchages. A l'arrière-plan, derrière la barrière qui isole les trois hommes, une carte de l'Afrique est accrochée sur le mur, à gauche d'un homme qui semble observer la scène.
