I sitt virtuosa porträtt av skådespelaren Antoine Michaut har konstnären försökt tävla med oljemåleri i större format. Denna ambition blev särskilt tydlig i samband med miniatyrmåleriets sista blomstringstid under 1800-talets första hälft. Jean-Baptiste Singry var en av Jean-Baptiste Isabeys mest framstående elever.
