De Utrechtenaar Jan Davidsz de Heem verhuisde in 1636 naar Antwerpen. Daar specialiseerde hij zich onder invloed van de Vlaamse meesters in het schilderen van pronkstillevens en festoenen. Hoewel de aandacht voor detail herinnert aan zijn Utrechtse leermeester Balthasar van der Ast, is de zwier en de rijkdom aan kleur eerder Vlaams.
