In "Lot 020412 (port)" Moffett exposes the third-dimension only previously hinted at in his paintings up to that point by suspending the canvas in the center of the room. Anchored by a driftwood board and immense cement block, the painting stands tall, imposing and altar-like. This apparatus, utilitarian on its own, becomes a formidable presentation striking a seemingly impossible balance with the painted element of the work. Juxtaposed with the supporting hardware is the finely cultivated lush painting, each fiber of paint methodically extruded on to the surface.
