Burning the English ships at Chatham, 1667, by Jan van Leyden. For the English, the Dutch attack came as a complete surprise. Two ships were captured. Six large English warships were burned. These were set alight with fireships, vessels that were sent, burning, amid the enemy ships. In the painting, the crew of the burning English ships are shown jumping overboard. In the foreground, Dutch marines are landing on shore.
