Een groep reizigers houdt rust bij een pleisterplaats. Zonder af te stijgen drinken de ruiters wat en ook hun paarden worden verzorgd. Door het lage standpunt dat de schilder koos maakt het schilderij een monumentale indruk. Ook de diagonale lijn in de compositie heeft veel effect: het riviertje voert de blik van de kijker van de bebouwing vooraan naar de kerk in de verte.
