Een vrouw achter een viskraam toont ons een mooie verse vis. Het licht valt rechtstreeks op haar gezicht en handen. De vrouw kijkt het schilderij uit en spreekt zo de toeschouwer direct aan. De band tussen toeschouwer en visvrouw wordt nog versterkt door de compositie: door de afsnijding van de marktkraam lijkt de kijker als het ware ín de kraam te staan.
