De rivier bij dit Hollandse stadje is bevroren en de inwoners vermaken zich op het ijs. Omdat de rivier schuin door het beeld loopt, is er extreem veel diepte in dit wintergezicht. Van de modieus geklede kolfspelers op de voorgrond gaat het oog van de kijker via de schaatsende figuurtjes naar de einder. Met lichtblauwe en witte accenten wekte Aert van der Neer de illusie van knisperend vriesweer.
