Den byggnad som nu kallas Gamla Meken har tidigare varit en mekanisk verkstad, helt enkelt en reparationsverkstad för valsverkets behov. Men husets historia är äldre än så. Det var från allra första början ett kolhus tillhörande By Smedja. Själva stommen till kolhuset, de så kallade kolhuspelarna, finns fortfarande kvar i väggarna.
