Adelsö kyrka som uppfördes vid slutet av 1100-talet, tillkom förmodligen på initiativ av kungen för att fungera både som församlingskyrka och gårdskyrka för den intilliggande kungsgården. Det kan antagas att det funnits en träkyrka före nuvarande stenkyrka, men inga spår av någon träkyrka har hittills påträffats. Den ursprungliga stenkyrkan bestod av ett långhus med smalare kor som kanske avslutades med en absid. På 1300-talet byggdes sakristian och under följande århundrade utfördes en omfattande ombyggnad av kyrkan. Först byggdes tornet och därefter tegelvalven och på 1470-talet förvandlade…
