Gammelstad är den största bevarade kyrkstaden i norra Norrland. Från och med 1300-talet var Gammelstad marknadsplats och centrum i en socken som tidvis omfattade nästan hela nuvarande Norrbottens län. I början av 1600-talet hade orten utvecklats till kyrkstad och fick handelsprivilegier. En kyrkstad är en samling stugor och stall där långväga sockenbor hade sin fasta punkt vid kyrkobesök. Här bodde man under de stora kyrkhelgerna, ting och andra tillfällen. Orsaken till att kyrkstäder uppfördes i norr var på grund av de stora socknarna.
