På 1770-talet ville kung Adolf Fredrik och drottning Lovisa Ulrika bygga ut slottet. Uppdraget att rita tillbyggnaden gick till arkitekt Carl Fredrik Adelcrantz. Under Gustav III:s tid beboddes Svartsjö endast sporadiskt och då mest under jakttiderna. Under 1600-talet anlades här en barockpark med en strikt kvartersindelning. Innanför 1500-talets, nu torrlagda, vallgrav anlades på 1700-talet gångvägar som strålade ut från slottets mittaxel.
