Een typisch Hollands wintergezicht: op het ijs vermaken mensen zich met schaatsen en sleeën. Rechts wordt paling gestoken in een wak. Een groepje mensen speelt ‘kolf’. Dit spel, dat op land en ijs werd gespeeld, was sinds de Middeleeuwen de populairste volkssport van Nederland. Het doel was om met ballen en een soort golfstick de palen van de kolfbaan te raken.
