Vid 1200-talets slut lät Magnus Ladulås bygga en borg. Under Gustav Vasa och hans söner Erik XIV och Johan III byggdes den om till ett renässanspalats. Under Kalmarkriget 1611-13 skadades slottet svårt, 1642 eldhärjades det och därefter fick det förfalla. På 1700-talet användes det bland annat som spannmålsmagasin och fängelse. Fredrik Wilhelm Scholander bestämde sig under 1800-talet att rädda slottet från totalt förfall och interiöra restaureringsarbeten påbörjades. Arkitekten Carl Möller fortsatte med den yttre restaureringen 1885-91 och gav slottet det utseende det har idag. 1919 fick Mart…
