Som en följd av det starka intresset för kinesiska hantverksprodukter uppkom även idén att tillverka siden på Drottningholm. FÖr detta ändamål och för andra nyttobetonade verksamheter, såsom svärd- och bösstillverkning, lät Lovisa Ulrika åren 1753-1765 uppföra bebyggelsen utmed den blivande Kantongatan - en spikrak väg väster om slottet i enlighet med de uppländska järnbrukens bruksgator. Längs gatan uppfördes således bland annat en eggjärnsmedja, en bössmedja, en silkesstrumpfabrik, en sidenfabrik och en knyppelskola.
