Orten dominerades tidigare av järnmalmsbrytningen vid Grängesbergs malmfält som pågick från 1500-talet fram till 1989. I januari 1990 gick det sista malmtåget från Grängesberg till Oxelösund. Grängesbergsbolaget hade under en lång period världens största järnmalmsflotta och vid sekelskiftet 1899-1900 var Grängesbergsbolaget Sveriges mest lönsamma företag.
