Bråttom sluss färdigställdes 1826 och fick då heta Stockholm. Sedan dess har såväl bro och sluss varit olycks­för­följda. 1834 påseglades bron av ång­fartyget Sjöhästen. Det tog hela fyra år att reparera bron. 1904 på­seglades nedre sluss­portarna så hårt av last­båten Mars så all­varligt att kanalen fick stängas. Dessa händelser med­förde att slussen officiellt fick ett nytt namn som kanske gav skepparna en tanke­ställare när de närmade sig slussen.
