Malmöhus anlades mot stadsborgarnas vilja 1537--42. Hela den norra sidan med slottet, porttornet, kanontornen och vallgravarna har i stort sett behållit sitt ursprungliga utseende. 1828-1921 användes Malmöhus som fängelse. Sedan 1932 har det inrymt Malmö museum. Under fängelsetiden uppförda byggnader kring inre borggården revs och ersattes 1937 av en ny museibyggnad efter ritningar av Carl-Axel Stoltz.
