Axevalla hed bildades för ca 11000 år sedan då inlandsisen höll på att smälta undan. Växter djur och människor koloniserade de nya markerna. Åtminstone under stenålderns slut för ca 4500 år sedan fanns en bofast jordbrukarstam på heden, som då var en frodig lövskog. Ett flertal gånggrifter, den tidens släktgravar låg orörda kvar vid 1800-talets början. Även gravar från brons- och järnålder finns i trakten.
